In addition to his medical career and his accomplishments as a mountaineer, skier, scuba diver, windsurfer, sailor, rock climber and world traveler, Bruce McDonald is a photographer. White settlers named this formation Shiprock. However, the Navajo believe that their people were brought to the area from the north on the wings of a giant bird. Once its passengers were discharged, the bird folded its wings and became this rock, which they call Tse Bitai, The Rock with Wings.
