Start a dialog with an experienced recruiter

We'd like to get to know you and your current situation so we can help create the optimum international locum tenens placement. We'll discuss your clinical skills, preferences, family situation, and any logistical issues that will need to be managed to make an assignment rewarding.

    Understand where you fit

VISTA offers Bermuda locum tenens, Australia locum tenens, New Zealand locum tenens, and Canada locum tenens opportunities.

There are several grades of positions doctors can fill in as an international locum tenens physician. They include:

    • Medical Officer of Special Scale or Career Medical Officer—doctor who has completed residency and depending on specialty, may or may not be required to have post-training work experience
    • Registrar—hospital doctor senior to a houseman but junior to a consultant, specializing in either medicine (medical registrar) or surgery (surgical registrar)
    • Consultant—board certified doctor with post-residency work experience.
    • Additional factors are considered and your recruiter will help identify which type of post would be the best fit.

New Zealand accepts Doctors of Osteopathy so long as the work experience meets their requirements. The degree must be from a school listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools or the ECFMG FAIMER Directory. Australia appears to be in the process of change, and may soon begin accepting DOs.

If you earned your medical degree outside of the United States, you are eligible for medical registration if your school is listed as noted above.

For work in New Zealand, you must also show evidence of active clinical practice in a comparable health care system for 36 of the last 48 months and for an average of 30 hours per week for a 12-month placement and 24 of the last 36 months for a six-month placement.

Requirements for Australia locum tenens, Bermuda locum tenens, and Canada locum tenens vary. We will be happy to discuss them when you call.

    Submit your credentials for review

We'll review your credentials to be sure you won't run into any registration (licensure) roadblocks and to determine which registration pathway will be most effective for you. We'll review your CV and help you prepare an internationally-savvy version and a cover letter that meets our clients' criteria. You can read our entire credentials review process if you would like more specifics.

    Provide references

We require a minimum of two verbal references from colleagues before we begin presenting your credentials to potential clients, and four references in total before we place you in an international locum tenens assignment. It is best if you are able to provide supervisors in your same specialty.

Talk with prospective employers and consider offers

Once an international healthcare organization has expressed an interest in working with you, we will coordinate a teleconference. If all goes well, the client will create an offer letter of employment or contract position that outlines compensation, benefits, and relocation assistance.

Let us handle all the details

Once you accept an international locum tenens offer, we begin processing your registration and visa paperwork. The process varies by country and can take anywhere from two to six months. Once completed, we'll arrange travel and make sure your arrival and settling in time is coordinated with the client.

    Plan your next adventure

As your international locum tenens assignment winds down, we will work with you to create a great transition plan into your next assignment. Some physicians immediately sign on for another international year, some return to the States and work short-term US Locum Tenens assignments, and others use Extended Placements to find their next permanent physician job. Whatever your need, we have the resources to make it happen.
